Prof Greg Barton, BA (Hons), PhD

Rector

Professor Greg Barton, one of Australia’s leading scholars on Indonesian culture and politics, is the Rector of The Deakin University Lancaster University Indonesia campus.
Professor Barton has thirty-seven years of experience researching Islam and social movements in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. He is one of Australia’s leading scholars of Indonesia, Islam, Muslim society, security and politics. He is recognised among the world’s top 2% scientists in the 2025 list compiled by Elsevier and Stanford University.
From August 2015, he took up the position of Research Professor in Global Islamic Politics in the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation (ADI), at Deakin University and previously was Herb Feith Research Professor for the study of Indonesia at Monash University (2007-2015).
He was also a member of the Australia-Indonesia Centre (AIC) staff team from the time of the establishment of AIC at Monash in 2014. Professor Barton is also an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG), University of Indonesia, and a Senior Fellow with the UAE-based Hedayah Center in Abu Dhabi.

Chief Operating Officer

Arifin has 20 years’ experience in business development, academic management and leadership in the education sector in Indonesia. Prior to taking up the role Chief Operating Officer at Deakin University Lancaster University Indonesia (DLI), Arifin served as the Director at Raffles College, Jakarta. Arifin’s experience at Raffles involved partnering with international higher education institutions from Singapore, the UK, and Australia. These partnerships involved full oversight of international programs offered in Indonesia through Raffles College.

Before joining Raffles College, Arifin lead business development initiatives for PT. Lippo Education and during this time he was involved in the set-up of a new private university in Medan – Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH). After helping establish UPH Medan, Arifin went on to serve there as Executive Director, Dean, and Vice President for Academics/ Provost.

Prior to working with UPH, Arifin held the role of Vice Chairman, Chair of the Accounting and Taxation Study Program, as Faculty, with Wilmar Business Indonesia at the Information Technology and Business Campus.

Arifin took his Doctor of Philosophy in Governance and Risk Management from Universiti Sains Malaysia and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Federation University, Australia where he was awarded the 2022 Distinguished Alumni of the University. In addition to completing his MBA at Federation University, Arifin undertook a Master of Management with STM IMNI, Jakarta.

Arifin’s bachelor’s degree was in Economics with a major in Accounting from the University of Methodist Indonesia. He is a Certified Business Valuer, Certified Management Accountant from ICMA, Australia and Certified Sales and Management Associate. For the period of 2016 to 2021, Arifin had the privilege of serving as the Head of PPL Department and Competency Test at Indonesian Public Tax Consultants Association Medan for the period of 2016 – 2021.

Arifin also has an extensive academic experience including the teaching of Accounting, Finance, Hospitality Management, Taxation, Marketing and Entrepreneurship; he has authored several textbooks about the Indonesian Taxation System, and Accounting and Entrepreneurship. He has Professional Lecturer Certification from the Minister of Education in Indonesia and is recognised as an Infopreneur in Education.
